With the recent art journal handout, I wanted to also have a way to start cataloging techniques, or as I call them "tools for your toolbelt". The way I see it, the more tools you have the more expressive your art can be.

This is a watercolor resist. It is pretty simple.

1. Draw your image with crayons/oil pastels. (Note. Do NOT use watersoluable ones)

2. Paint over top of the image with watercolor. The crayons repel the watercolor leaving the image intact.

A fantastic view of a bleak future created by the outbreak of a virus in the year 1996 and an attempt made to discover a solution by returning to the time of the outbreak. James Cole (Bruce Willis) is forced to travel back in time to periods between 1990-96 to try and discover who or what was responsible for the outbreak, all the while being monitored from the future by scientists and administrators. Cole is unsurprisingly considered to be crazy in 1990 and is sent to a mental institute where he meets Jeffrey Goines (Brad Pitt), whom he comes to believe is the culprit of the outbreak of the virus. Dr. Kathryn Railly (Madeleine Stow) becomes interested in Cole because of her research about doomsdayers, one of which Cole becomes because of his talk of the outbreak of a deadly virus. Together with Railly, Cole attempts to unravel the mystery that is the past of the 12 Monkeys.

I loved the way that the Round Robin art journal turned out, but had made some (small) errors with the binding and knew I could perfect it. I guess that is what I get for being a perfectionist. But it did allow me to use some of my other recent finds, and make a journal to be used for my new art journal (since I only have 3 pages left in the current one)!

I used the same idea again, but was able to make the binding neater, and opted for using buttons instead of grommets. I also planned ahead and included a closure on this one!

Nick has posted his analysis on Googles First Click Free . This free service allows the content providers to participate into it and promote their content by making the first click free when users discover the content via Google and subsequently enforce registration or subscription for the rest of the content.

I think this is a great idea! I am personally against the walled garden approach and do not believe in registrations and subscriptions just because content providers havent managed to convince me so far to register or subscribe to for their content. This is a great opportunity for the publishers to showcase their content by making the first link free, demonstrate the value proposition, and drive traffic towards the paid content.

The discussion on the service has so far centered around:
  • Google making other search engines users second-class citizens and not sticking to an unmediated role.
  • Users ability to trick the content providers to get access to all the pages by acting as if the request is coming from a Google bot
I do not buy into the criticism around Googles unmediated role. No one is stopping the other search engines to build a similar service and work with the content providers. Though I would expect Google to somehow differentiate the first click free content from the always free content on the search results so that users dont feel that they are being tricked.

I also do not buy into the argument that users can trick the content providers by faking the request as if it is coming from a Google bot. Google can very easily solve this technological challenge to ensure that only the Google bot and no one else gets access to all the free content.

As much as I appreciate and value this service I suspect that the many publishers wont get it. I hope publishers dont ask Google to pay for the traffic instead of being happy that Google is sending them the traffic. I also see a challenge and an opportunity for the publishers to redesign their website to convert the first free click into a registration, subscription, or a future visit.

I am participating in Journal Girls Small Art Pen-Pal Swap. I shared a sneak peak previously, but now that my pen-pal should have received her package, I will show the completed art work. I had a lot of fun working on this!

I used the definitions of each of the words (secret, small, art, pen, pal, swap, artist) as my focal images. Each small card has an inspirational letter inscribed on the back, and all of the cards are enclosed in a small hand-folded book.

Here are some pictures of myself mailing the package:
