Open Access Week, a global event now entering its fourth year, is an opportunity for the academic and research community to continue to learn about the potential benefits of Open Access, to share what they’ve learned with colleagues, and to help inspire wider participation in helping to make Open Access a new norm in scholarship and research.

“Open Access” to information – the free, immediate, online access to the results of scholarly research, and the right to use and re-use those results as you need – has the power to transform the way research and scientific inquiry are conducted. It has direct and widespread implications for academia, medicine, science, industry, and for society as a whole.

Open Access (OA) has the potential to maximize research investments, increase the exposure and use of published research, facilitate the ability to conduct research across available literature, and enhance the overall advancement of scholarship. Research funding agencies, academic institutions, researchers and scientists, teachers, students, and members of the general public are supporting a move towards Open Access in increasing numbers every year. Open Access Week is a key opportunity for all members of the community to take action to keep this momentum moving forward.

Its International Open Access Week this week, and while every week is Open Access Week at Film Studies For Free, this website decided to celebrate this special week of events by flagging up the work of an individual who can rightfully claim to be one of the most hard-working supporters of this important cause: Jan Szczepanski.

FSFF was recently contacted by Jan, a librarian from Sweden who has been a collector of freely accessible scholarly e-journals since the end of the 1990s. He has been responsible for gathering the longest ever lists of links to (multilingual) Open Access scholarly journals titles, mostly in humanities and the social sciences, many of which you can access through the embedded document below (also see here).

FSFF hasnt yet fully cross-checked Jans list with its own list of English-language online Film and Media Studies Journals (permanently accessible from the table of contents in the right-hand sidebar), but will do so as soon as possible in order to add notable items it hasnt yet come across.

FSFF has set up the document below so that you can immediately scroll down through the Film titles, from page 107. But you can also perform a search for Masskommunikation to scroll automatically to page 491 for lots of Media Studies titles.

Thanks so much to Jan for getting in touch and especially for all his hard work in assembling this monumental list.

The Dealmaker Media has published a list of their favorite Cloud, SaaS, and Tech bloggers. Once again I am happy to report that I made the cut. I am also glad to see my fellow bloggers Krishnan and Zoli on this list who are the driving force behind Cloudave. I was on a similar list of top cloud, virtualization, and SaaS bloggers that they had published in the past.

Under The Radar is one of the best conferences that I go to. This is the best place for disruptive start-ups to pitch an get noticed. They make a great attempt to connect entrepreneurs with investors and blogger like me. I have blogged about the disruptive early stage cloud computing start-ups as well as the disruptive start-ups in the categories of NoSQL and virtualization. Most of these start-ups have either had a good exit or have been doing well. The best example so far is Herokus $212M exit. I met the Heroku founders at Under The Radar a couple of years back.

I am looking forward to soaking up even more innovation this year!

I loved the way that the Round Robin art journal turned out, but had made some (small) errors with the binding and knew I could perfect it. I guess that is what I get for being a perfectionist. But it did allow me to use some of my other recent finds, and make a journal to be used for my new art journal (since I only have 3 pages left in the current one)!

I used the same idea again, but was able to make the binding neater, and opted for using buttons instead of grommets. I also planned ahead and included a closure on this one!

Nick has posted his analysis on Googles First Click Free . This free service allows the content providers to participate into it and promote their content by making the first click free when users discover the content via Google and subsequently enforce registration or subscription for the rest of the content.

I think this is a great idea! I am personally against the walled garden approach and do not believe in registrations and subscriptions just because content providers havent managed to convince me so far to register or subscribe to for their content. This is a great opportunity for the publishers to showcase their content by making the first link free, demonstrate the value proposition, and drive traffic towards the paid content.

The discussion on the service has so far centered around:
  • Google making other search engines users second-class citizens and not sticking to an unmediated role.
  • Users ability to trick the content providers to get access to all the pages by acting as if the request is coming from a Google bot
I do not buy into the criticism around Googles unmediated role. No one is stopping the other search engines to build a similar service and work with the content providers. Though I would expect Google to somehow differentiate the first click free content from the always free content on the search results so that users dont feel that they are being tricked.

I also do not buy into the argument that users can trick the content providers by faking the request as if it is coming from a Google bot. Google can very easily solve this technological challenge to ensure that only the Google bot and no one else gets access to all the free content.

As much as I appreciate and value this service I suspect that the many publishers wont get it. I hope publishers dont ask Google to pay for the traffic instead of being happy that Google is sending them the traffic. I also see a challenge and an opportunity for the publishers to redesign their website to convert the first free click into a registration, subscription, or a future visit.

Recently I had to go to a consulate to get a visa and the consulate would only accept a USPS money order and a USPS pre-paid envelope. I went to a post office to get those. That particular post office decided to change their business hours that day to open late. I hurriedly drove to a different post office where two out of there clerks didnt know how to issue a pre-paid envelope! At personal level I never look forward to going to a post office. It invariable delays my schedule. I am met with unpleasant customer service and inefficiency everywhere. This is also true with some of the other services that I get but theres one major difference. I cannot opt out of USPS.

USPS anticipates to lose about $7 billion during the fiscal year that ends in September. They even have their own conference called PostalVision 2020 where they have invited technology thought leaders such as Vint Cerf and many others to honestly and seriously look at the issues they have. The agenda is to:
"Postal Vision 2020/2.0 is as much a movement as it is a Conference.  It is a forum for an open and honest dialog to better understand the future of postal communications and shipping, and what this means to those who regulate, supply and use mail.  It’s about sharing ideas and knowledge with the hope of sparking innovation and the creation of new successful business models.  It’s about asking each other lots of difficult questions for which there may be many answers to consider before finding those that serve the long term health of the industry and any particular enterprise."
USPS is broken at so many levels; they have short term as well long term issues to deal with and it is likely to get uglier before it may get better. Channeling Geoffrey Moore, USPS needs to retain their core and and redefine the context. Massive fleet of trucks, logistics, and outlets in all foreseeable locations is their core strength. Postal mail and other related services is their context where they are simply unable to compete because of shrinking addressable market (due to digital communication) and poor service design that applies the legacy mindset to solve todays and tomorrows problems.

USPS should think outside the box. No pun intended.

Here are some ideas/suggestions:

Deliver groceries: Remember Webvan? I loved their service during the dot com boom. One of the main reasons they went out of business is they had no expertise on logistics. Since then nothing much has changed in home-delivered grocery business. What if USPS delivered grocery to your home? What if they partnered with a local supermarket and took over their logistics business? This is a complimentary business model. The supermarkets are not in the delivery business and its not economical for them to enter into the logistics business. This is also a sustainable business that helps the environment. The USPS trucks are on the road no matter what, but now they can take a few cars off the road. This may sound crazy but times are changing and its time for USPS to rethink what unfair advantage they have over others.

Re-think mail delivery: Its perfectly acceptable to me if I only receive my mail every other day. In many cases, I am fine if I dont get my mail for a week at times. Theres nothing time-sensitive about my mail. And with changing demographics, this is true with a lot of other people as well. Incentivize customers to skip mail by offering them discount on other services and have less trucks and less people going around the neighborhoods. This brings the overall cost down and opens up new revenue opportunities.

Double down on self-service: I know USPS is trying hard to add more and more self-service kiosks but theyre not enough. Think like Coinstar and Redbox. I should be able to do everything related to USPS at the places where I can get milk at the 11th hour, money from ATM, and gas for my car. They really need to work hard to give people a reason to use USPS when people have much better alternatives to mail packages. Think of UPS, DHL, and FedEx as incumbents and leap frog them at places, using the unfair advantage that USPS has, where they cant possibly compete.

Rethink the identity: USPS doesnt directly receive federal tax dollars and it is expected to meet expenses from the revenue it generates. But, its not that black and white. Even though USPS doesnt get any tax money it receives plenty of other money via grants and other special funds. Its neither truly a government entity nor truly a business entity. If USPS needs to be fixed it needs to rethink its identity and decide whether its a complete public sector or a mix of private and public sector and how. Once that identity is set they can follow through on their revenue sources, cost measures, and building an ecosystem of partners. Mixed and complicated business structure introduces complexity at all the levels and prevents the organization to think and execute in a unified way.

This basic tutorial demonstrates how to create tabs in a java GUI window . Let’s assume that we are going to create a Crypto tool, which can encrypt some data and also decrypt  some encrypted data into some readable format. But of course I have no intention to discuss how to encrypt/decrypt data here. For the user friendliness of our GUI it is better to separately display these two tasks in it. hence we will have a Encryption tab and a decryption tab and so on.

This is the preview of the tabbed window. I added only a single button to keep the code short and concise.

Untitled

The GUI has just two tabs. every tab has a title , an icon (optional) and a component ( the component to be displayed when the tab is clicked). this component is most probably a JPanel which contains all the other components (buttons , labels …etc). and optionally , a tooltip can also be added . the source code for  creating tabbed window is given below.

package hasijournal.tabbeddemo;
import javax.swing.*;
import java.awt.*;
class Crypto extends JFrame {
    public Crypto() {
        setTitle("Crypto Tool");
        JTabbedPane jtp = new JTabbedPane();
        // get the container
        getContentPane().add(jtp);
        // create tab components
        JPanel jp1 = new JPanel();
        JPanel jp2 = new JPanel();
        jp1.setLayout(new BorderLayout());
        jp2.setLayout(new BorderLayout());

        JButton ebtn = new JButton("Encrypt data");
        jp1.add(ebtn, BorderLayout.SOUTH);
        JButton dbtn = new JButton("Decrypt data");
        jp2.add(dbtn, BorderLayout.SOUTH);

        // add icons
        Icon it1= new ImageIcon("enc.png");
        Icon it2= new ImageIcon("dec.png");

        /*--- Overloaded addTab methods in JTabbePane class---*/
        // void addTab(String title, Component component)
        /*  Adds a component represented by a title and no icon. */
        // void addTab(String title, Icon icon, Component component)
        /* Adds a component represented by a title and/or icon,*/

        // void addTab(String title, Icon icon, Component component, String tip)
        /* Adds a component and tip represented by a title and/or icon */
        jtp.addTab("Encrypt",it1,jp1,"Encrypts data");
        jtp.addTab("Decrypt",it2,jp2,"Decrypts data");

    }
    public static void main(String[] args)  {
        Crypto tp = new Crypto();
        tp.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
        tp.setBounds(100,100, 300, 300);
        try{
            UIManager.setLookAndFeel(UIManager.getSystemLookAndFeelClassName());
        }catch(Exception e){}
        SwingUtilities.updateComponentTreeUI(tp);

        tp.setVisible(true);
    }
}

Mark Penn, the author of Microtrends, has written an article in WSJ describing information shoppers. These shoppers are the consumers who go online to find all the related information ahead of time before making a purchase. The traditional sales people and the TV commercials dont interest them and do not fulfill their information appetite. I enjoyed reading Microtrends and this article does a great job highlighting a psycho-demographics that marketers will have trouble going after using traditional approaches. The marketers should pay close attention to this trend. The emotional appeal of a brand could help attract consumers to the products but may not necessarily translate into sale unless info shoppers are satisfied with the necessary information for a given situation to make that decision.

Situational Marketing: The marketing campaigns, active or passive, miss the real situational context. The consumers are making a decision under specific circumstances that I would describe as a micro-situation. The information that is presented to them, most of the time, lack the context and stop just at the brand appeal. If the marketers can identify these micro-situations such as looking for a new iPod since my Zune froze or a dual layer DVD that would support my current burner they could win over those consumers.

Google pioneered the search over browse via AdSense. The contextual ad placement based on users intent while searching have performed better over non-contextual banner ads that people typically see (or not) when they browse. Extending this concept beyond the ad to make information available to the shoppers when they need them, until they complete the sale, would go a long way against bombing them with non-contextual marketing campaigns. Marketers have used obscurity to promote the coolness of the brand but what really helps consumers to seal a deal is the brand transparency.

Think beyond traditional information channels: The average number of visits to a vendors site has been consistently falling since people are exploring other ways to find information and engage into conversations. Providing information on a participatory platform allows the consumers to build community around the products and brands to exchange information. The marketers can tap into the collective wisdom to promote the products. The open source software is a living example that demonstrates the influence of community and community-generated content in buying behaviors.
